What is Hosted Lync?

In short, Hosted Lync can be defined as Unified Communications as a Service (UCaaS). Firstly, let’s look at what Unified Communications is.
What is Unified Communications?
A Unified Communications offering is where multiple communication channels are provided as an integrated service on one platform. A Unified Communications platform can include the following features:
  • Instant messaging
  • Voice over IP (VoIP)
  • Video conferencing
  • Data sharing
  • Speech recognition
Users are able to access any of the above resources from the same interface. Typically, messages can be received via one medium and responded to via another with the additional ability to use channels concurrently, for example, sharing documents whilst video conferencing. This allows for more effective communication.
Interoute’s Hosted Lync service is based on Microsoft Lync, Microsoft’s unified communications service.
What is Microsoft Lync?
Microsoft Lync is an enterprise level software offering aimed at large organisations rather than individual users. Features include instant messaging, enterprise voice capabilities and video conferencing. These are available cross-device; via PCs, tablets and mobiles.
What is Hosted Lync?
Hosted Lync is a centralised communications solution that utilises Microsoft Lync and is hosted in the cloud. Interoute’s Hosted Lync is built according to Microsoft best practice and is hosted in our award winning Virtual Data Centre (VDC).
We have integrated Hosted Lync into our Video as a Service cloud, allowing users to join and host video conferences with any device regardless of connectivity. Whether using a computer, mobile phone, tablet or video conferencing suite, users can be involved in such conferences with anyone else with access to the Hosted Lync service.
Compared to other, similar offerings, deployment of Interoute’s Hosted Lync is a much less timely process. Deployment of traditional unified communications solutions can take a period in excess of six months. Interoute’s offering, meanwhile, takes advantage of our Virtual Data Centre (VDC), meaning deployment can take a matter of days.
Benefits of Hosted Lync
There are various benefits to Hosted Lync. Some of these are listed below:
  • No need for extensive investment; heavy investment by clients in the design, purchase, deployment and management of an on-site service isn’t required
  • Device flexibility; users can communicate effectively with one another whatever type of device they are using, even across devices of differing types. This assists organisations who utilise BYOD (bring your own device) policies or those who just deploy various devices on their networks
  • Productivity; communication is simple, flexible, accessible and enriched so that users can convey more information, from more locations and more easily, than ever before, improving the efficiency of work place communication and therefore driving productivity
