Interoute deploys 60 Gbit/s of capacity in 48 hours to rescue a major customer from what would have been a catastrophic loss of data

LONDON 25th November 2008 – Interoute owner of the most advanced next-generation network in Europe worked around the clock to replace a 1200km section on one of its largest customer’s network that was experiencing rapid degradation. From ‘order to delivery’ the solution took only 48 hours enabling significant volumes of Internet traffic to continue to flow without any disruption to end customers.

The successful technology partnership between Interoute, considered the fastest growing operator in Europe, and Infinera, with its unique digital optical networking systems, has allowed Interoute to successfully solve a number of difficult connectivity crises for its customers.

In this instance, one of Interoute’s large global customers had acquired another operator which already owned a large international fibre optic network. Post acquisition, the unprecedented daily volume of data and IP traffic now utilising this route highlighted the fact that this network was in need of immediate and substantial upgrade. Moreover customers were already beginning to experience quality of service issues.

Interoute, whose Infinera-enabled optical networking systems are present along the same route, responded with an industry first: delivering six 10Gbs wavelengths across 1200km of Europe in just 48 hours, ensuring that customers experienced the exacting quality of service levels required to keep Europe at work. Infinera’s digital architecture enables its optical systems to provision and configure additional capacity on the Interoute network within minutes.

Siow-Meng Soh, Current Analysis Senior Analyst, Global Telecom Services, commented, “Provisioning 60Gbps in 48 hours is impressive and Interoute is stepping in the right direction by shortening provisioning times to be more responsive to customer needs. A strong pan-European network, rapid service provisioning and high network performance are key areas that enable Interoute to achieve service differentiation”

Gareth Williams, Interoute’s CEO concluded “Managing to activate 60 Gbit/s of bandwidth in less than 48 hours (a quantity of traffic equivalent to 7.5 million simultaneous mobile calls) has made us extremely proud and emphasized again the first-rate quality of our network and the total dedication of our people”.

“Infinera optical systems prides itself on unprecedented capabilities for speed of service delivery, scalability, quality, and reliability, due to our unique digital architecture based on our breakthrough large-scale photonic integrated circuits,” said Infinera CEO Jagdeep Singh. “We are delighted to be helping Interoute as it sets new standards for quality and service in the European telecom industry.”
