Youth of today want help to become IT pros

Tue 06-May-2008

Young people want more information and guidance about careers in the IT industry, according to a new survey.

The Blackberry poll of 1,000 young people aged between 11 and 16 years old found that nearly half (43 per cent) would be more "attracted" to the sector if they had more information about it.

According to the research, pay was a huge factor in making the industry attractive, as three-quarters (75 per cent) of young people said they would be more inclined to choose a career that paid well.

The figures revealed that a third of girls were turned off technology careers due to a lack of smart roles models.

Maggie Philbin, admired for her work on Tomorrow's World, said: "It's so frustrating to see teenagers using technology naturally and creatively, seemingly unaware that they could play a key role in shaping the way we use technology in the future.

"And it's equally important, once they make the decision to work in this area, that they are encouraged and inspired to rise to the highest level."

Blackberry launched its Women and Technology awards three years ago, to honour the achievements of women both within and beyond the industry.
