WiMax to replace DSL as remote provider of broadband

Mon 07-Apr-2008

WiMax will replace DSL as the preferred delivery method of broadband in remote areas, industry analysts have said.

A new report by Juniper Research estimates that more than 47 million global subscribers will use WiMax in five years time.

It states that WiMax will begin to replace DSL in fringe areas next year, and will establish itself fully after that by 2011.

Report author Howard Wilcox said: "We determined that the vast majority of the WiMax 802.16e trials and network contracts which are being announced almost daily will begin by providing fixed broadband."

Mr Wilcox explained that WiMax is an extremely versatile wireless data transmission technology because it can deliver broadband not only in unwired areas, but can also improve speeds for subscribers on the fringe of DSL coverage.

"We anticipate that mobile usage will develop after initial demand for fixed and portable services. WiMax 802.16e is a flexible platform that can operate in all three modes of usage," he added.
