Web surfers to hit coastal town

Wed 30-Apr-2008

Coastal town Scarborough has launched free wireless broadband for people living in and visiting the resort.

Yorkshire Forward and the South Bay Traders Association have joined forces to provide funding for the project

John Senior, chairman of Scarborough's South Bay Traders Association, said: "This is a superb example of how tradition meets technology, with Britain's first ever coastal resort now providing the country's first seafront with free broadband Wi-Fi access.

"Visiting businessmen and women can be in contact with their office and business world while enjoying lunch on the seafront."

Nick Taylor, urban renaissance manager, told the Scarborough Evening News he believes the Freebay Wi-Fi scheme demonstrates that urban renaissance "isn't just about bulldozers and buildings".

He added that the project would be run by people from the town to benefit visitors and residents alike.

Scarborough has a population of 50,000 that is boosted every summer due to tourists visiting the Yorkshire seaside resort.
