VoIP lobby group to tackle regulators
A Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) lobby group has been formed.
Providers of the internet-enabled communications have joined up to try and direct European regulation of the industry, Telappliant reports.
The group called Voice on the Net (VON) Coalition Europe believes that government regulation will have a "detrimental impact" on the industry unless it influences direction.
Members of the group include Google, Intel and Microsoft.
Stephen Collins, director of global governmental and regulatory affairs at Skype, told the industry news provider that: "In order to unleash their vast benefits, policymakers need to embrace forward-thinking policy approaches.
"If we automatically subject this new technology to legacy telephone regulation, consumers and business users could miss out on the new services, increased choices, better prices and improved features that VoIP, for example, can deliver."
According to a recent survey by Extreme Networks and Data Integration, 88 per cent of business users in the UK that use VoIP are happy with the technology.
