VoIP 'to boom through to 2012'
The Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) looks set to enjoy a booming next four years, one analyst has predicted.
A new report by In-Stat predicts the consumer telecommunication market including VoIP will be worth up to $2 trillion (£1 trillion) by 2012.
Keith Nissen, analyst and author of the report, said: "Over the next five years, 150 million PSTN lines will be eliminated, yet total voice revenue worldwide will remain steady."
The "digital divide" will continue to grow and penetration will stand at around 85 per cent in developed countries by 2012, while developing countries will stay around ten per cent.
According to the research forecast, the market will grow at an average rate of 5.7 per cent over the next half decade.
Meanwhile, market researcher iLocus revealed last month that despite the risk of recession, firms had no choice but to "build out" their IP infrastructure and VoIP will continue to boom.
