Virtualisation greening datacentres
Virtualisation could be a key technology for making datacentres more green, it has been claimed.
Delegates at the Energy Logic Symposium in Sydney heard speakers claim the technology could help to create less power-hungry datacentres, reports ZDNet.co.uk.
Chris Mandahl, director of domestic sales at Emerson Network Power, said: "Global electricity prices increased 56 per cent between 2002 and 2006, which has generated the desire to create more efficient datacentres."
Mr Mandahl added that virtualisation could reduce datacentre power consumption by up to 14 per cent.
Brad Engstrom, a consulting engineer at Cisco, was also speaking at the conference and told delegates that virtualisation was not restricted to servers as it could be implemented in networks.
He added that green IT "is about agility" and virtualisation is important in reducing carbon emissions.
Gartner revealed last month that once benefits have been proved many firms will find virtual worlds can lead to innovation and enable a competitive advantage over rivals.
