UK government keen to promote next generation internet services to businesses

Fri 22-Feb-2008

The UK government has revealed that it believes that next generation high speed broadband is essential to the country's future economic success.

Business and competitiveness minister Shriti Vadera said that networks which can offer faster speeds will become increasingly important to UK businesses.

To make sure firms can make the most of the newest generation of internet services, the government revealed that it was set to launch a review into what are considered to be the potential barriers to the mass roll-out of next generation technology.

"New technologies will push the boundaries of today's communications infrastructure," Ms Vadera explained.

"We must be ready to respond to future technological developments, which will place unprecedented challenges for our communications networks over the coming decade.

"That is why we need to look ahead to the future now. We need to prepare the way for the UK to adopt groundbreaking new technologies to ensure that we do not get left behind - competitively or technologically."

She added that businesses should invest in next generation services to ensure "creativity and growth" are not stifled.

As part of the review, the government will examine possible opportunities to minimise the cost of private sector investment.
