UK behind in open source take-up

Wed 16-Jul-2008

UK firms are lagging behind businesses in other countries when it comes to adopting open source software, according to research.

Silicon.com reports the UK is only fifth in the table of nations where companies are taking on board open source technology.

According to the site almost three-quarters of all firms in Britain have no plans to take up open source application in the next year while 36 per cent say they are not interested in such software at all.

But Silicon.com also said the UK is "joint top" with Germany and the US in terms of firms piloting open source technology, with five per cent, according to Forrester Research.

Other figures from the report show six per cent of those polled in the research said they were planning to start pilots in the next 12 months.

Computer World also reports Forrester Research has shown most businesses that use open source software are content to consume products rather than contribute code themselves.
