UK behind in e-crime race, says expert

Thu 05-Jun-2008

The UK is lagging behind other major countries in the global battle against cyber crime, it has been reported.

While the US's FBI co-ordinates its national cyber-crime response, the UK's efforts have been attacked by politicians, the police and businesses alike for failing to provide a central intelligence base, according to Silicon.com.

The report added that police chiefs are waiting to hear if the Home Office will grant £1.3 million to fund the proposed Policing Central E-crime Unit, to co-ordinate cyber-crime investigations nationwide.

As the E-crime crackdown heats up, the website compared and rated the responses from four different nations, awarding the US top while the UK came in at last.

India, who came second, has set up cyber crime units within all major cities including Bangalore, Delhi and Mumbai while third-placed Australia co-ordinates nationally between local investigations and international agencies.

Meanwhile it was reported in Computerworld UK this week that the IT industry expects the proposed e-crime unit to result in a visible apprehension of cyber-criminals and not just focus on fraud.
