UK at risk from cyber attacks, says Lord

Tue 17-Jun-2008

The House of Lords has heard how the UK is still at risk from cyber attacks and is being targeted, it has emerged.

Lord West, the security minister, told the house yesterday (June 16th) that while it was not in the interest of "national security" to divulge which organisations were targeted, many such attacks with the intention of stealing data or disrupting services are occurring.

Though it is unclear where the attacks are coming from they originate from many parts of the world, he added.

"Many nations are very vulnerable and we need to look at it very closely," he warned.

In related news, it was reported earlier in the month by Silicon.com that the UK is lagging behind other major countries in the ongoing global battle against cyber crime.

While the FBI co-ordinates the US's response through a centralised cyber-crime unit, the UK has been criticised by politicians, police and businesses alike for failing to provide a vital intelligence base.
