UK 'a haven' to e-criminals
The UK has become a haven for 'e-criminals' after a surge of 'e-crimes' were committed in the country, according to industry research.
An Internet Crime Report revealed that the nation is also home to the third highest number of victims of such online criminal activity.
The Internet Crime Complaint Centre (IC3) reported a $40million (£20m) rise in the global cost of e-crimes over 2006.
IC3's report found that the UK ranked second only to the US as host to the most 'e-criminals' accounting for 15.3 per cent of total reported offences.
James E Finch, the FBI's cyber division assistant director, said in a statement: "What this report does not show is how often this type of activity goes unreported.
"Filing a complaint through IC3 is the best way to alert law enforcement authorities of internet crime."
Silicon.com has launched an e-crime crackdown campaign calling for a national UK cyber crime police unit.
