Turn PCs off to help save the world, says expert

Wed 21-May-2008

Employees need to turn off electrical equipment in order to help their bosses cut down on company carbon emissions, one expert has said.

Carbon Footprint also revealed that most organisations' servers are significantly "under utilised and over specified" and this could be solved by combining under-used machines into one.

John Buckley, managing director of the eco-advice provider, said the negative impact that IT has on the environment was to do with carbon-emissions caused by the electricity needed for their day-to-day.

"To reduce carbon emissions in the workplace staff need to be trained to turn off electrical equipment when not in use," he added.

Firms could also consider software programmes available that limit the energy wastage by putting PCs into standby mode when not being used.

A report released last year by Global Action Plan found there was an estimated 10 million office PCs in the UK and 43 per cent of the country's adult population regularly use one at work.
