The cloud computing revolution

Cloud computing will become as influential as E-business, one analyst has said.

Gartner revealed the emerging sector is heralding an "evolution" of business that has the potential to change the status quo in the IT market.

Daryl Plumme, the firm's managing vice president and fellow, said a continuing trend over the past 15 years toward IT industrialisation has grown in popularity as services delivered via hardware, software and people become repeatable and usable by a range of customers.

"This is due, in part to the commoditization and standardization of technologies, in part to virtualization and the rise of service-oriented software architectures, and most importantly, to the dramatic growth in popularity of the Internet," he added.

According to the analyst, established vendors have a great presence in traditional software markets and new Web 2.0 and as cloud business models evolve and expand things could change.

Gartner revealed earlier in the week that virtual worlds could save firms money in the long-term.
