Surge in bandwidth demand 'worries ISPs'

Tue 01-Apr-2008

Britain's internet service providers (ISPs) are worried about the increased demand for broadband bandwidth, according to one IT expert.

Writing in the Telegraph, Claire Beaumont said the way Britain uses the internet is changing as many rely on "bandwidth-hungry" services.

She noted that as more than 90 per cent of internet-enabled homes in Britain use broadband, connectivity itself brings an ever greater desire to take advantage of new applications such as video on demand.

"That means the amount of data we transfer is growing at a rate of knots, and so broadband networks are coming under a strain that will force both tariffs and technology to evolve," she added.

In July 2007, the BBC's on-demand TV service – the iPlayer – was launched enabling users to download popular shows over the internet to watch on their PC.

More than 11 million TV programmes were downloaded or streamed from the service by 2.2 million users in January.
