SuperSpeed USB set for 2009
Lightning-fast USB delivering a throughput of approximately 3 Gbps should arrive inside a year, researchers say.
In-Stat claims SuperSpeed USB, or USB 3.0, will start shipping in 2009 with SuperSpeed-capable products widely available the following year.
In-Stat analyst Brian O'Rourke said: "SuperSpeed USB will be targeted initially at the PC market and in devices requiring high rates and volumes of data transfer, such as external storage."
The company also said 2.6 billion USB devices were shipped in 2007 and added the market is expected to grow by 8.3 per cent all the way through to 2012.
Developer One RF Technology recently unveiled a compact 868 MHz USB dongle modem allowing PCs to control and monitor wireless sensor networks.
Intel is one firm to have announced and demonstrated USB 3.0, unveiling the technology last year.
Devices which could take advantage of the technology include external hared drives, flash readers and video cameras.
One issue which could impact on the success of USB 3.0 is high CPU usage, with USB 2.0 and 1.0 previously accused of this.
