Study reveals European VoIP uptake

Tue 26-Feb-2008

New research has suggested that more and more people are opting for voice over internet protocol (VoIP) services in western Europe.

Data released by TeleGeography showed that there were 21.7 million VoIP subscribers in Europe by the middle of 2007 - a rise of over six million.

What's more, the researchers estimated that VoIP subscription rates would have continued to rise and would have reached nearly 30 million by the end of the year.

The study noted that businesses and consumers in different countries have adopted VoIP at different rates, with France leading the way.

Recently, Colin Duffy, council member for the Internet Telephony Services Providers' Association, predicted that VoIP would become even more popular as more businesses realised it benefits.

"When you upgrade your telephony networks now, you always put in either a VoIP network or a TDM network that is upgradeable to VoIP - you'll never go back to the old way of doing things," she concluded.
