Simple software 'doesn't protect against data loss'

Mon 19-May-2008

Businesses are not sufficiently protected against software losses through simple anti-virus and firewall software, one source has said.

Firms need to consider specific data loss software to guarantee that information is not leaked or stolen, reports Forbes.

The Identity Theft Resource Center's figures revealed that more than 127 million people's records were lost in 2007.

It predicts this year's figures could surpass that figure, as 224 companies have reported losing customer or employer data to the tune of some 11 million records so far this year.

John Thompson, the chief executive of Symantec, told the news provider: "With the amount of stored data growing 50 per cent a year, trying to protect it all is both inefficient and costly.

"Instead, it's about securing the most critical information, from source code to customer records to employee data."

A recent CA survey found that more than three quarters (79 per cent) of companies lose data each month.
