Server shipments up 8%

Fri 23-May-2008

The number of worldwide server shipments in the first three months of 2008 grew by 7.6 per cent compared to the same period last year, one analyst has said.

Gartner revealed that first-quarter revenue this year also climbed 4.3 per cent as the shipments amounted to some $13.6 billion (£6.85 billion).

Jeffrey Hewitt, research vice-president of the firm, said a number of dynamics affected the market to produce such a growth.

"For example, x86 server replacements were on an upswing as the year commenced, we continued to see build outs of large Web datacentres and emerging-market growth forged ahead."

Meanwhile it was reported last week that metropolitan Ethernet sales grew by more than a quarter last year.

Infonetics revealed that the market's worldwide sales had reached $13 billion (£6.68 billion) and predicted they would continue to boom for the next four years.
