Rising costs 'threaten' IT indsutry

Wed 07-May-2008

Rising electricity costs are threatening the IT industry, according to one energy price tracker.

The Tariff Consultancy also revealed that the UK has some of the highest energy rates in Europe.

By tracking changes in the cost of Europe's data centre per rack for more than 60 separate facilities and the price of industrial electricity in eight EU country's, the data centre price tracker is able to assess the changes over the past three months.

Margrit Sessions, the organisation's managing director, said: "Industrial electricity prices are the clear and present danger to the data centre user and the IT community.

"It is now being presented as a separate cost item to the purchase of data centre space."

She claimed that suppliers were taking advantage of the space in data centres and were charging higher rates for it.

According to the firm, the average monthly price of space has grown to 800 euro (630 pounds) per rack but has reached 1,000 euro in the UK, Ireland and Switzerland.

The organisation claims to be one of the world's leading specialists in pricing, tariffing and billing analysis.
