Police announce e-crime unit amidst mounting pressure
A former security chief has blasted the lack of a national e-crime fighting unit, according to reports.
The former security officer at chemical firm ICI made the comment before a top Met police officer outlined details of such a division.
ITPro reports that the unit will require some £5.3 million of funding.
Paul Simmonds, ICI's former IT chief, said the unit should be set up, adding that he hoped "the government [saw] sense" and the decision was "a no brainer", reports Computerworld.
Announcing the plans, Charlie McMurdle, a detective superintendent at the Met police, said: "The unit needs about 50 staff, not all police officers but people from industry as well."
The police have only budgeted £1.3 million for the unit and have not disclosed where they intend on raising the extra cash from.
ITPro reports that it hoped some of the money would come from the Home Office as well as industry and vendors.
