Paperless offices way off, says IDC

Mon 07-Jul-2008

The execution of a paperless office could be years away, according to the results of a recent report.

In an IDC study - entitled Document Management Solutions: What End Users Want - businesses revealed they are producing more hardcopies today than five years ago.

Around 60 per cent of respondents said the number of pages that they printed had increased when compared with the amount five years ago.

Only 41 per cent of those polled said they had a thorough understanding of document management but added they did not think digital documents were highly complex.

Rishi Ghai, program manager for ANZ Hardcopy Peripheral Research, warns that increases in compliance regulations will mean that businesses may have to implement document management solutions.

He said: "Competitive pressures and the ever-increasing complexity of operations are driving the need to streamline information organisation."

Last month, the IDC reported that the PC market in the UK had increased by 14.3 per cent as shipments during the first quarter of 2008 had grown to 3.25 million units year on year.
