Open source is the norm, says survey

Wed 04-Jun-2008

Open source software (OSS) is becoming mainstream as more businesses adopt the technology, it has been reported.

Firms are adopting OSS as it is free but they are doing so "quietly", according to PCWelt.de.

A study by CIO.com revealed more than half (53 per cent) of firms worldwide use open-source applications and another ten per cent plan to do so at some point this year.

The Linux operating system is the most popular product with more than three-quarters (78 per cent) of organisations utilising it.

According to those polled, the technology is reliable enough for critical mission applications as 62 per cent of IT bosses say it is ready for 'prime time'.

Other applications that are being adopted include web servers and software development.

Meanwhile, it was recently estimated by John Powel, chief executive of open-source firm Alfresco, that the OSS industry is worth some £30 billion.
