Notebooks lead growth, says IDC

Tue 22-Jul-2008

Strong demand for notebooks and low-cost ultra-portables is driving EMEA PC market growth, one analyst has said.

IDC revealed PC shipment growth exceeded expectations in the EMEA (Europe, Middle East and Africa) and recorded an increase of almost one quarter (24.5 per cent) in the second quarter of 2008, compared to the same time last year.

The research also found notebooks continued to drive overall market growth booming by 53 per cent year on year while desktops performed better than expected with 0.7 per cent growth.

Karine Paoli, associate vice president for the firm's EMEA personal research, said despite a challenging economic climate the market had shown strength and several factors suggest this will continue throughout the second half of the year.

"Businesses may exert spending caution, but replacement activity will continue to take place, and the development of lower-cost offerings," she added.

Meanwhile, new data from ABI Research suggest the number of Wi-Fi hotspots continues to increase dramatically over the course of the year.
