Next generation networks 'set to grow in Europe'

Thu 28-Feb-2008

A new report has suggested that Europe's telecom networks underwent extraordinary changes in 2007.

Research released by Research and Markets and titled 'Europe - Infrastructure - FttH & NGNs' said that the continent saw significant investment in all-IP next generation networks during 2007.

It explained that this investment was driven by consumer and business demand for high-bandwidth applications.

The researchers explained: "In addition, 2007 saw increased activity in fibre deployments as a result of the falling price of fibre builds and regulatory approval of municipal and government involvement in large infrastructure projects."

It added that heavy investment had forced "regulators to reconsider the need for national fibre networks".

What's more the report said that this meant that that there could be a "substantial movement in the fibre sector in 2008 and coming years".

Earlier this month, the UK government revealed that it was to launch a review of next generation broadband services in the country.
