National Work From Home day to highlight remote staff
Up to five million workers are expected to work from home today for National Work From Home day.
Technology and the internet are already driving the work from home trend, with 3.5 million people in the UK - one out of every eight - working from home rather than the office.
HR consultant Sandra Beale believes the growth in the number of people working from home is due to the increased use of the internet, email, broadband, mobile phones and wireless technology facilitating the ability to work wherever people choose.
Research carried out by OmniBoss found that bandwidth requirements will more than double in the next five years.
The survey, released on Monday, also showed that one in five executives expected their bandwidth requirements to grow by 150 per cent or more, due to a variety of factors.
Michael Davies, product director for Viatel, the survey's sponsor, said: "IT managers need to make sure that they don't neglect their bandwidth or networks could grind to a halt."
Work Wise UK is behind National Work From Home day and also campaigns for flexible working, condensed hours and nine-day fortnights.
Chief executive Phil Flaxton said: "The benefits of working from home, even occasionally, are now widely accepted."
