Mobile VoIP 'set to grow'
The numbers of users taking advantage of mobile voice over internet protocol (VoIP 3G) is set to increase over the next five years, new research has suggested.
According to a report from analyst Research & Markets, users will increase from almost zero at the beginning of last year to reach up to 250 million by 2012.
This means the technology has the potential to surpass the number of people using Voice over Wide-Area Wireless Network devices.
However, the research also suggests that despite this growth VoIP 3G will still make up less than ten per cent of the mobile subscribers, which is expected to hit 3.5 billion users in 2012.
VoIP 3G allow enabled mobile devices to offer similar capabilities to internet-based solutions, which may prove attractive to companies looking to increase their flexibility.
Last week, findings from ABI Research suggested the number of Wi-Fi hotspots is increasing in 2008, reflecting the increased use of greater broadband bandwidth.
