Metro Ethernet sales up 27%

Wed 14-May-2008

Metropolitan Ethernet sales grew by more than one quarter (27 per cent) last year, one analyst has said.

Infonetics revealed that worldwide sales reached $13 billion (£6.68 billion) and predicted the market will continue booming at double-digit rates for the next four years, according to Network World.

The analyst said more Ethernet equipment is being deployed by carriers where SONET/SDH or ATM equipment was previously installed.

It revealed the total number of metropolitan Ethernet ports in 2007 reached 40.5 million.

Sales of Ethernet access devices will quadruple from 2007 through 2011, according to the firm that noted Ethernet microwave is used for more than half (55 per cent) of mobile backhaul connections worldwide.

Meanwhile, the Ethernet alliance demonstrated a range of Ethernet technologies at Interop Las Vegas 2008 earlier this month.

Recent research from Bharatbook.com has suggested that the market for Ethernet products will increase to nearly $6 billion in 2012, from $1.4 billion last year.
