Internet advertising to soar, says IDC

Wed 25-Jun-2008

Advertising spending on the internet is set to increase dramatically according to a new report published by the IDC.

In 2008 worldwide spending will total $65.2 billion (£33 billion), representing ten per cent of all media spending across the globe, the organisation has claimed.

The IDC's Digital Marketplace Model and Forecast projects this figure will increase to approximately $106.6 billion by 2011 and will reach 13.6 per cent of total spending.

John Gantz, chief research officer at IDC, said: "Compared to more mature types of advertising, internet advertising is growing at a phenomenal rate."

The report noted that spending in the US is set to dominate global figures with advertising in the country set to make up $265 billion and $45 billion on overall advertising and internet advertising in 2011, respectively.

In other news, the IDC has claimed that the cost of cooling hard disks for data storage purposes cost businesses $1.3 billion last year and is set to rise to nearly $2 billion in 2009.
