IT spending not falling, says poll

Tue 20-May-2008

Organisations' IT spending is showing no signs of declining despite the current economic turbulence, one new survey suggests.

More than three quarters of IT professionals polled said their IT budgets will remain steady this year while more than half (55 per cent) plan to increase their spending, it has emerged.

The Enterprise Management Associates (EMA) survey asked nearly 1,000 IT workers their spending plans for 2008 and showed an overwhelming majority have no plans to cut budgets despite talks of an economic recession in the US.

Scott Crawford, EMA research director, told Computerworlduk there had been a lot of concern the sector's spending would be restricted due to economic concerns "such as the subprime mortgage collapse".

"However, along the lines of several other technology indicators, including strong earnings, our research shows that technology has become so critical to improving the performance of business that organisations might look outside of the IT department to trim expenses," he added.

Meanwhile, research released last week found that IT workers were happy with their profession and 70 per cent expected a wage rise in the next year.
