IT qualifications under fire

Mon 31-Mar-2008

IT bosses have called for a shake-up of training in the sector, according to a leading industry publication.

Peter Green, operations manager at Telegraph Media Group, told IT Week there needs to be a widely-recognised chartered qualification to distinguish what IT practitioners do.

Meanwhile Robert Chapman, the director of IT training company Firebrand, described the British Computing Society (BCS) as having an "intellectual focus at odds with the general perception in the market place".

He added that the BCS's chartered IT professional qualification (CITP) was unfit for purpose.

The Carphone Warehouse's architecture director, David Byrne, explained that due to a "scattering" of qualifications it is difficult to know what is what.

In a statement, BCS chief executive David Clarke said: "Our decision to make CITP much more widely available is a major step for the BCS.

"Our trustees have taken this decision in the interests of the profession and see it as an important step towards achieving the aims of the BCS professionalism in IT initiative."ADNFCR-1505-ID-18529720-ADNFCR
