IEEE approves 24-watt draft
An industry body has approved a draft calling for a power boost over Ethernet cable, it has been reported.
The IEEE 802.3 task force confirmed that it had approved the third draft of the Power over Ethernet (PoE) Plus specification, InfoWorld reveals.
The draft calls for up to 24 watts of electricity to be passed through Ethernet cable, allowing businesses to take advantage of new technologies that require a higher wattage than 14 - the current maximum allowed.
The industry news provider explains that the consortium for the promotion of Ethernet technology's decision would allow businesses to take full advantage of the freedom of expansion that PoE provides.
Brad Booth, chairman of the Ethernet Alliance, said that the roadmap beyond PoE Plus is uncertain because the bundling of cables together might not work due to the heat generated beyond 24 watts, reports InfoWorld.
