IDC: Security spending on the rise

Fri 20-Jun-2008

Security hardware spending is on the rise in Western Europe, one analyst has said.

IDC revealed the security appliance market reached sales of $332.08 million (£166 million) across Western Europe, showing an 8.1 per cent year-on-year rise.

Romain Fouchereau, research analyst at the firm, said the results show negative growth when compared to the very strong results from the final quarter of 2007.

"This decrease was seen across all five workloads of the security appliance tracker and reflects the weakness of the general economy rather than the decline of a particular segment," he added.

Unified threat management, content management and intrusion-prevention systems are still showing strong growth and continue to drive the market, he concluded.

The analyst attributes the firewall and virtual private network market maturing as a reason for the slower growth.

Founded in 1964, IDC claims to be the premier global provider of market intelligence, advice and events for the IT, telecoms, and consumer technology markets.
