Gartner: email to lead cloud computing

Wed 02-Jul-2008

The use of email will lead the cloud computing revolution, one market analyst has said.

Gartner has revealed the number of commercial mailboxes using a cloud-provisioned model will grow from one per cent last year to 20 per cent over the next four years.

Matthew Cain, the analyst's research vice president, said the cloud computing market is rapidly transforming from the domain of small suppliers into a market where the largest IT companies aggressively compete.

"Events during the past year have created the conditions for the rapid growth of the cloud delivery model for enterprise e-mail, with companies such as Google, Yahoo, Dell and Microsoft all making major investments in cloud computing," he added.

As the large firms fight for market share there will be a fundamental restructuring of the email sector.

The analyst predicted last month that the number of PCs worldwide has reached one billion units and is set to double in the next six years.
