Expert urges Irish firms to consider virtualisation
An IT expert has suggested that businesses in Ireland and the rest of Europe should opt for virtualisation if they wish to reduce their carbon emissions.
Microsoft's Bill O'Brien suggested that there are currently 120,000 servers in the Irish market and that this number is expected to grow by 35,000 per year, website siliconrepublic.com reported.
Mr O'Brien explained that these servers increased emissions that the IT sector generated.
To combat the situation, he suggested more firms should opt for virtualisation.
"It's estimated only five per cent of businesses are virtualised today, that represents a tremendous growth potential and an incredible saving in terms of businesses expenditure on energy year-on-year," he told the site.
"This could potentially make a real and significant contribution by offsetting carbon emissions by over two million tonnes and reducing cost to businesses from 56 million per year to just over 3.5 million per year."
Mr O'Brien added that research suggested that many Irish firms were currently carrying out virtualisation evaluation projects.
"This is a hot area right now and offers a lot to business bottom line and capability."
