Expert: Remote email should enable wiser working

Fri 13-Jun-2008

Remote email access should enable staff to use their time more wisely and not increase working after hours, one expert has said.

IT author Matthew Beaumont revealed the internet has "spoiled people" into expecting instant gratification from organisations.

In agreement, Bryony Clow, Vodaphone UK's mobile email expert, said there is now an increased pressure to check inboxes while otherwise engaged.

She added: "There is no excuse these days for not getting back to someone within the hour."

Everything is on the internet now as it has got faster as a means of communication and getting information, she concluded.

The latest Bellwether research found that remote technology is increasing demand for speedy responses to queries as one in seven UK firms now expects a response in under 30 minutes, with one in five companies in Birmingham expecting half-hour replies.

According to the survey, the estimated cost to businesses of opportunities lost via a slow response stands at £18,840 per business annually.
