Expert: Bandwidth management is vital for European businesses

Thu 28-Feb-2008

To make the most of available bandwidth, businesses in Europe need to make sure they proactively manage their allocations, an industry expert has said.

Brian Solomon, the web editor of TMCnet, explained that it was becoming increasingly important for European businesses to put in place systems to monitor and manage their bandwidth useage across departments.

He wrote: "By proactively managing bandwidth allocation by department and by protocol, organisations can determine exactly how much of each protocol is able to flow into each department over an access line.

"This significantly reduces the cost of acquiring additional bandwidth to improve the network's performance.

"Bandwidth Management enables departments to specify their bandwidth requirements per network protocol, which equates to higher efficiency, greater flexibility and cost management."

For example, Mr Solomon said that a firm should determine how much bandwidth each department requires. Within this, firms can establish how much is needed for different protocols, such as email and internet traffic.

"This model allows less critical applications to be serviced, but at more realistic rates. This guarantees that no single application is able to dominate your Internet link," he concluded.ADNFCR-1505-ID-18487877-ADNFCR
