European businesses 'ready for SaaS'
Businesses in Europe are ready to use Software as a Service (SaaS), according to a recent survey.
The industry research suggested that more than a third of firms would invest in SaaS over the next two years.
IDC polled more than 2,000 IT leaders in western Europe to see if they would be willing to use the technology to replace or supplement existing ERP solutions.
Bo Lykkegaard, research director for IDC's European Enterprise Applications and Services programme, said he was surprised by the positive reaction.
"We believe SaaS spending will be directed at new applications and at replacement of broken applications, rather than at ripping and replacing working solutions," he remarked.
He added that European organisations tend to seek the SaaS delivery model to reduce the risk and costs of new IT initiatives.
In other news, Silicon reports that open source will become popular, according to Gartner.
The analyst believes that "almost all businesses" will use the technology within a few years.
