ECB disk storage booms, says expert
The worldwide external controller-based (ECB) disk storage market grew by more than one-tenth in 2008, one analyst has said.
Gartner revealed worldwide sales for ECB disk storage totalled some $4.3 billion (£2.2 billion) in the first quarter of 2008 10.2 per cent more than the first three months of the previous year.
Robin Burke, research vice-president for the analyst's global storage quarterly statistics programme, said the growth indicates the market was still in strong demand.
"Capacity shipments grew 48.9 percent year over year to 1.1 million terabytes showing the continuing mounting need for additional storage, he added.
The analyst detailed that EMC, Dell, NetApp and Fujitsu/Fujitsu Siemens all enjoyed "strong" double-digit growth year over year with EMC maintaining the top spot finishing with a quarter of the market share.
Meanwhile, Gartner revealed earlier in the week the global semiconductor market is set to grow faster than first predicted.
Its research vice-president, Richard Gordon, said it was widely assumed that the US' economical slowdown would have reduced demand this year.
