Customs' board suspended after data loss

Thu 17-Apr-2008

HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) has suspended its board following a review into lost data, it has been reported.

Computer Weekly revealed that the decision was taken after an external review highlighted leadership failings following the misplacement of two CDs containing child benefit data on 25 million people.

HMRC's main board will be replaced by an interim team of private sector advisors who will help oversee the department's staff consisting of 85,000 people in 600 offices.

The new team will sit on a board called the Executive and Advisors' Committee.

Acting chairman, Dave Hartnett, who will chair the committee, said: "[HMRC decided to] pause the board in its current format and to appoint an interim panel of advisers for six months, allowing a shift in focus and skills"

Meanwhile, new figures released this month revealed that governmental departments had misplaced over 1,000 laptops and almost 500 mobile phones since 2001.
