Creative industries 'need next generation broadband service to thrive'

Wed 27-Feb-2008

Provision of next generation broadband services will be needed to support creative businesses in the UK and Europe, government officials have claimed.

Recently, the UK government announced that it was set to carry out a review of next generation services in the country, and a minister has now stressed that better infrastructure is needed to support creative businesses in particular.

Competitiveness minister Shriti Vadera explained that the creative industries were set to become the dominant drivers for the economies of the country's cities within the next decade and that new IT infrastructure was needed to support these companies.

"We must be ready to respond to future technological developments which will place unprecedented challenges for our communications networks over the coming decade," she explained.

"High speed broadband is also vital for the growth of Britain's creative industries, which already contribute some £60 billion to the UK economy.

"That is why we need to look ahead into the future now. We need to prepare the way for the UK to adopt groundbreaking new technologies to ensure that we do not get left behind - competitively or technologically."
