Courts switched on
Courts nationwide have been fitted with Wi-Fi access in a bid to allow those in the legal profession to gain quick access to reference material, it has emerged.
Internet facilities have been installed in 67 courts over the past three months to enable court users to take advantage of Wi-Fi between sittings.
Courts minister Maria Eagle welcomed the availability of Wi-Fi saying that it is an "important step" to improve facilities for court users.
"Many legal professionals who use the courts need access to fast and instant online information," she added.
"Similarly HMCS (Her Majesty's Courts Service) recognises that going to court as a victim, witness or juror can be disruptive for many people who may need to keep in touch with their business, work or family during the day."
The installation was completed after a successful pilot scheme at eight courts including Leeds combined and Birmingham crown courts.
It was reported last week that the UK's broadband market was deregulated by Ofcom after more than four providers began operating in the country.
