Carrier Ethernet ?will drive demand?

Tue 22-Apr-2008

A new report has predicted that the availability of carrier ethernet technology in packet-optical transport systems will boost demand for such products.

The Packet-enabled Optical Networking Quarterly Market Tracker by Heavy Reading suggests that the sales of packet-optical products will grow to be worth $2.8 billion by 2012, Light Reading reports.

According to the study, this growth is likely to be driven by the ability to provide Ethernet services via optical products although the majority of vendors have only just begun to offer connection-oriented Ethernet capabilities.

Meanwhile, the news provider notes that a number of companies, including Verizon Communications and Fujitsu Network Communications, are beginning to show a greater interest in packet-optical technology.

In related news, Computer World recently reported that the ten Gigabit Ethernet Storage Alliance has been formed to help organisations employ a 10Gb per second Ethernet storage system.

IT manager Aeron Martin told the publication that the body ought to “get the market moving”.
