Businesses at risk from new virus

Wed 23-Jul-2008

A new virus has hit several governmental websites putting at risk the details of thousands of people who use the sites.

Known as Asprox, the malicious code has compromised websites run by Norfolk NHS and 12 local authorities.

Security experts fear the malware has spread to two million computers worldwide, which could be affected by the infections believed to have been caused by Eastern European hackers.

A spokesperson for Hackney council told politics.co.uk that contrary to speculation, it was still not clear if a virus which hit the local authority's website over the weekend was in fact Asprox.

He admitted the council did not know how many people have been affected partly because of the nature of the virus.

In other news, Gartner claimed last week that security applications as cloud-based services will dramatically soar in the next five years.

The firm forecasts the technology will more than triple in many segments by 2013.
