BI platform market booms, says Gartner

Fri 20-Jun-2008

The global businesses intelligence (BI) platform market grew by more than one tenth last year, one analyst has said.

Gartner revealed in a recent report the total BI platform sector enjoyed revenue in exceeding some $5.1 billion (£2.6 billion) in 2007 – up 13 per cent from 2006's $4.5 billion.

Dan Sommer, senior research analyst at the firm, said large stack vendors had raised their presence in the sector from one-fifth to two-thirds of market share.

This marks a shift from a market driven by "best-of-breeds" to one dominated by "megavendors", he added.

However, many smaller independent BI vendors grew faster than the market, and we expect continued innovation and new vendors to enter the market," he concluded.

The report highlighted BI spending in Western Europe and especially Germany and France showed "surprising growth" after several years of "morose spending".

According to a report released by the analyst last week revealed worldwide PC shipments are on course to enjoy growth of 13 per cent this year.
