Apples iTune sales boom

Fri 20-Jun-2008

Apple announced yesterday (June 19th) that sales of music through its iTunes store had passed the five billion mark.

The IT giant also revealed it is selling tracks online at a rate of 83 million per week and estimates its music catalogue now features around eight million songs.

It announced the movie wing of its business is also taking off with iTunes customers renting and purchasing more than 50,000 movies every day.

A company statement said: "iTunes features movies from all of the major movie studios … customers can also purchase new movie releases from major film studios and premier independent studios on the same day as their DVD release."

The firm announced its move into the movies in the UK on June 4th.

It claims to have ignited the personal computer revolution in the 1970s, reinvented it in the 1980s with the release of the Macintosh and continues to lead the way in innovation with its OS X operating system and iLife applications.
