Analyst: Bluetooth to boom

Tue 10-Jun-2008

Bluetooth-enabled equipment will boom in the next five years, one analyst has said.

ABI Research revealed that the total number of Bluetooth sales will reach 2.4 billion units in 2013.

The analyst's new report states that more than half of these will be mobile handsets with accompanying headsets – a segment likely to account for more than three-quarters (75 per cent) of the total market.

Douglas McEuen, the firm's senior analyst, said: "Integration is a key trend in Bluetooth markets. Designers are saying 'Bluetooth is in everything, so what else can we add to the Bluetooth chip?' GPS is a popular candidate, as is FM radio."

He added the speed and range of the technology was being increased by integration of Bluetooth with 802.11 wireless (Wi-Fi).

Meanwhile, Grant Thorton revealed last week that total revenue for the Voice over Internet Protocol industry will reach £13.5 billion after enjoying its number of customers doubling in 2006 and increasing four fold after that.
