'Most ecommerce sites will use SaaS by 2013'

Wed 30-Jul-2008

The majority of ecommerce sites will use software-as-as-service (SaaS) offerings over the next few years, a research firm has predicted.

According to Gartner, 90 per cent of these businesses will use at least one SaaS-based service by 2013, such as product reviews or recommendations.

Gene Alvarez, research vice president at the firm, said the SaaS offerings allow companies who cannot afford ecommerce capabilities to compete online.

"The trend toward SaaS applications has affected customer relationship management (CRM) and other applications, and ecommerce isn't exempt from this trend," Mr Alvarez added.

Among the predictions from the research firm is that 40 per cent of ecommerce sites will use a solution completely based on SaaS.

Mr Alvarez has warned companies to come up with a strategy to adopt the SaaS before doing so.

Tier1 Research predicted earlier this year that SaaS is being rapidly adopted by the customer relationship management sector.

According to the firm, companies adopt it due to its cost-effective delivery method.
