The European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) is a research institute and a 24/7 operational service, producing and disseminating numerical weather predictions to over 30 Member States. ECMWF uses advanced computer modelling to generate operational weather forecasts which are vital to both authorities and the general public.

Its advance warnings of severe weather events allow contingency plans to be put in place in the battle against natural disasters that have major consequences for society and the economy.

ECMWF was established in 1975 and now employs around 270 staff from more than 30 countries. Its forecast data is used by commercial organisations worldwide and relied on by millions of people every day ranging from airlines, research and shipping institutions as well as consumers checking if they’ll need an umbrella today.

Severe weather warnings

The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change believes that floods, droughts, heatwaves and wind storms are likely to become more common and more severe in the future. ECMWF’s network is used to provide important early warnings ahead of these critical weather events based on its medium-range forecasts.

 

A network built for forecast growth

Interoute developed an MPLS solution to support an increasing numbers of regional meteorological agencies connecting to ECMWF’s network through multiple access methods.

The expanding network connects over 50 countries across the US, Europe, APAC, Middle East and Africa supporting varying levels of diversity with a clearly defined SLA for each agency.

Since selecting Interoute VPN, ECMWF has experienced a significant reduction in operational costs, enabling higher speeds for partners using the network without increasing costs. Over the next six years it plans to expand its global network further to connect more regional offices.
